Lawrence Bernstein

Lawrence Bernstein was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. He has had a life-long passion for both photography and the Earth Sciences and holds MSc and PhD degrees in the Earth Sciences. Lawrence spent a career in energy exploration, living with his family in western Canada, North Africa, and southeast Asia. Since 2018 he has lived in Toronto and been fully dedicated to the photographic arts. His photography hangs in homes and offices in Canada, the USA and southeast Asia and has earned numerous awards. Lawrence is a member of the Toronto Camera Club, the Gallery 44 Center for Contemporary Photography and OFFBEAT, Canada’s largest online photographic community. His work has been exhibited internationally and in Canada. In 2022 Lawrence had two solo photography exhibitions, one at Labour of Love entitled Patterns Structure Substance which showcased his monochrome architectural abstractions, and one held at the Toronto Camera Club’s Powell Gallery entitled Metropolis- A Photographic Exploration of My City. In 2023 Lawrence’s work was shown as part of a group exhibit at the Powell Gallery for the Contact 2023 photography festival.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Lawrence’s artistic journey was born out of a career in the Earth Sciences. His photography expresses a deep curiosity about the patterns, structure, and substance of human-built and natural environments. In this exhibition Lawrence focusses on the natural world around him.
